Cycling Trivia

Question: Why do male cyclists shave their legs?
The answer comes from Dave Moulton, ex-frame builder and cycling historian. "Tradition", says Dave.

"I started racing in 1952 and that’s when I started shaving my legs. The European professional riders shaved their legs because they were riding the big stage races like the Tour de France and the Giro d’Italia.
Stages were long back then, sometimes in excess of 180 miles. (289.6 km.) They needed some serious massage therapy at the end of each day in order to have the leg muscles supple and relaxed ready to go again the next morning. It is neither comfortable for the cyclist or the masseuse to be massaging hairy legs.

I was no different from any other cyclist of the 1950s; we all wanted to emulate the great professional riders of that era. So we shaved our legs."

'Kyrie' by Mr. Mister, 1986 album: Welcome to the Real World
Kyrie eleison, kyrie eleison, kyrie

The wind blows hard against this mountain side, across the sea into my soul
It reaches into where I cannot hide, setting my feet upon the road
My heart is old, it holds my memories, my body burns a gemlike flame
Somewhere between the soul and soft machine, is where I find myself again

Chorus:
Kyrie eleison, down the road that I must travel
Kyrie eleison, through the darkness of the night
Kyrie eleison, where I'm going will you follow
Kyrie eleison, on a highway in the light

When I was young I thought of growing old, of what my life would mean to me
Would I have followed down my chosen road, or only wished what I could be

Chorus:
Repeat

Kyrie Eleison: Greek meaning 'Lord Have Mercy'

Rajesh needs a new set of legs.
Rajesh Durbal was born with only one totally functional limb, his left arm. Despite this extrordinary disability, he has successfully raced several triathlons. His next event is Pineapple Man and beyond ... Kona. You can help him achieve his goal. Click this link to learn the story of an amazing athlete, Rajesh Durbal.

Hello Athletes:

Before reading on I ask  you scroll above and activate the track for 'Kyrie'.
Done? Good, now that you have sound ...

I started this website encouraging those who could not race to offer openings for others on a wait list.
The website quickly became my passion, providing information with features I'd never seen combined into one source. I've lost track of the links but it is well beyond 100.

I've been involved with helping Melbourne Beach Rotary since 2005 as an 'athlete advisor'. That was the year the MB Rotary realized it needed  to provide it's own member-race director if the event was to continue.

Every year since 2005, I've added to the workload of race directors, first Larry Cody and now Don Riordan. They have asked for and accepted my suggestions and those of other athletes.  This year it was the new cancellation policy allowing many more athletes to join those who were able to register back in December-January.

Two years ago Don Riordan told me the MB Rotary was planning to 'pull out all stops' to make the 25th anniversary event the best ever. They have always told me the event was committed to  athletes and  Rotary  will certainly prove this once again in 2010. While providing for race expenses and amenities, there are many thousands of dollars generated for the primary reason of benefiting charitable causes.

Fortunately we athletes have been blessed with two recent outstanding race directors, Larry and Don. However we should not fail to recognize volunteers from earlier years. Pineapple Man has a long history of people offering service simply because they had a passion for their sport , giving their effort back to something they loved. To those unknown heroes, I say 'thank you.'

The Pineapple Man was my first triathlon in 2001 when I entered with a challenge from my brother Tom. I was 2nd to last in my AG that year but this was the beginning of a  change in my life.  Great success quickly followed my first race. I've always believed my history is proof that people may not find their potential ability until they try something new.

I think everyone knows this isn't about winners and losers and where you are on a results list at the end of a race.  It's more about how much you've done with what ever level of 'gift' you have been given.

There is so much more possible inside every one of us that we may never know until we take the unexpected path... as I did on June 3rd, 2001.
